Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Buick Cascada, 2018 Buick Cascada, and 2017 Buick Cascada. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE:

    Ensure that the cylinder head and the cylinder block sealing surfaces are clear of oil, grease and old gasket material.

  1. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  2. Inspect the flatness of cylinder head and the engine block sealing surfaces.

    Second technician is required.

    Hold tension to the camshaft timing chain (1) with 2 hands.

    Set the crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to 60 degrees (a) before TDC of cylinder 1. Use the EN-45059  angle meter and the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

  5. Lay the camshaft timing chain between the timing chain guides.

    NOTE:

    The installation procedure of the cylinder head must be fitted within 10 minutes of applying the sealing compound. DO NOT coat sealing compound into the engine block bores and threads.

    Apply 2 sealants (2, 3), approximately 2.5 mm (0.10 in) thick, to the engine block (1). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

  7. GM3643009

    Cylinder Head Gasket(1) - Install a NEW gasket.

  8. Apply 2 additional sealers (2, 3), approximately 2.5 mm (0.10 in) thick, to the cylinder head gasket (1). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

    Cylinder Head(2) - Install

  10. Install the NEW cylinder head bolts finger tight.(1)[10x]

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Tighten the cylinder head bolts in the sequence shown.(1)

    1. First pass in sequence to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    2. Second pass in sequence to an additional 90 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
    3. Third pass in sequence to an additional 90 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
    4. Fourth pass in sequence to an additional 90 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
    5. Final pass in sequence to an additional 15 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.

    Install the exhaust camshaft position actuator adjuster (2).

  13. Mind the camshaft pin (1), the exhaust camshaft position actuator adjuster does fit in only one position.
  14. Install and hand tighten a NEW exhaust camshaft position actuator adjuster bolt (3).

    Install the intake camshaft position actuator adjuster (1).

  16. Mind the camshaft pin (2), the intake camshaft position actuator adjuster does fit in only one position.
  17. Install and hand tighten a NEW intake camshaft position actuator adjuster bolt (3).

    Install the EN-51148  holding tool (1) to camshafts and to the cylinder head.

    1. Turn the camshafts at the camshaft position actuator adjuster bolts (5, 6) until the EN-51148  holding tool fits.
    2. Tighten the bolt (3) in the middle.
    3. Tighten the 2 outer bolts (2, 4).
  19. Tighten the camshaft position actuator adjuster bolts (5, 6) a first pass to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).
  20. Tighten the camshaft position actuator bolts a final pass to an additional 120 - 135 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.

    A second technician is required.

    Hold tension to the camshaft timing chain (1) with 2 hands.

    Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (2, 3) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

    Install the camshaft timing chain to the camshaft position actuator adjuster.

  24. Ensure that the self-made colored links (1, 2) match to the marks on the camshaft position adjuster actuators.

    Timing Chain Tensioner(1) - Install

  26. Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt(2) - Install and tighten10N.m (89 lb in)[2x]

    Push the timing chain guide - left side (2) in the direction of the arrow.

  28. Remove the EN-50513  tensioner pin (3) from the tensioner (1).

    Loosen the EN-51148  holding tool bolts (2, 3, 4).

  30. Remove the EN-51148  holding tool (1).
  31. Check the position of the crankshaft, camshaft and camshaft position actuator adjuster.
    1. Turn crankshaft 720 degrees in the direction of engine rotation by the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt.

      Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top death center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (2, 3) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer absorber bolt (1).

      Install the EN-51148  holding tool (1) to camshafts and to the cylinder head.

      1. Tighten the bolt (3) in the middle.
      2. Tighten the 2 both outer bolts (2, 4).
    4. If EN-51148  holding tool can be installed, the engine timing is properly adjusted.
    5. Remove the middle bolt (3) and the 2 outer bolts (2, 4) and remove the EN-51148  holding tool (1).

    Upper Timing Chain Guide(1) - Install

  33. Upper Timing Chain Guide Bolt(2) - Install and tighten 7 N.m (62 lb in)[2x]
  34. Clean the engine upper front cover sealing surfaces.

    NOTE:

    The complete installation procedure of the engine upper front cover and the engine mount bracket must be fitted within 10 minutes of applying the sealing compound. DO NOT coat sealing compound into the engine upper front cover bolt bores and threads.

    Apply an approximately 2.5 mm (0.10 in) thick bead of sealant (1, 3) to the engine upper front cover (2). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

    Apply additional sealant (1, 2) to the transitions between the cylinder head and the cylinder block in the shown areas.

    Position the engine upper front cover exactly to the engine lower front cover bores.

    Install the engine upper front cover (1) at first to the engine lower front cover and then to the cylinder head.

    Mind the different bolt lengths.

    Install at first the 3 engine front cover bolts (2) loosely.

  39. Install the engine front cover bolt (1) loosely.
  40. Tighten the 3 engine front cover bolts (2) to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  41. Tighten the engine front cover bolt (1) to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).

    Install the 7 engine front cover bolts (1) and tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

  43. Engine Mount Bracket Replacement  - Install

    Engine Mount(5) - Install

  45. Install 3 NEW engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts (3) and 3 washers (4).
  46. Install the 2 engine mount to body bolts (2) and the engine mount nut (1).
  47. Tighten the 2 engine mount to body bolts (2) and the engine mount nut (1) to 62 N.m (46 lb ft).
  48. Tighten the 3 NEW engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts (3) a first pass to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  49. Tighten the 3 NEW engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts a final pass to 60 - 75 degrees, using the EN-45059  meter.
  50. Unsupport the engine.

    Engine Wiring Harness Bracket(2) - Install

  52. Engine Wiring Harness Bracket Bolt(1) - Install and tighten 10 N.m (89 lb in)

    Engine Wiring Harness Bracket(1) - Install

  54. Engine Wiring Harness Bracket Nut(2) - Install and tighten 9 N.m (80 lb in)
  55. Raise the vehicle.

    Drive Belt Idler Pulley(1) - Install

  57. Drive Belt Idler Pulley Bolt(2) - Install and tighten 25 N.m (18 lb ft)

  63. Electrical Connector(7)@Intake Camshaft Position Sensor(5) - Connect
  64. Fuel Feed Front Pipe(6)@Fuel Injection Pump(9) - Connect
  65. Electrical Connector(4)@Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid(3) - Connect

  67. Turbocharger Replacement  - Install
  68. Intake Manifold Replacement  - Install
  69. Camshaft Cover Replacement  - Install
