Check Crankshaft Bearing Clearance (With Plastigage)

- Install crankshaft with the 5 upper crankshaft bearing shells at the engine block.
- NOTE:
Do not rotate the crankshaft.
Lay on 5 times plastigage (flexible plastic thread) axially over the entire width of the crankshaft bearing journal (1).
- Install the 5 lower crankshaft bearing shells.
Install the lower crankcase (1).
- Install the 10 lower crankcase bolts (2).

Refer to Fastener Caution .
CAUTION:Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .
Tighten the 10 lower crankshaft bolts in the sequence as shown, use the EN-45059 meter.
- First pass tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
- Second pass to 120 degrees.
Install the 2 long lower crankcase bolts (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Install the 8 short lower crankcase bolts (2) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
- Remove the crankcase.
Remove the 2 long lower crankcase bolts (1).
- Remove the 8 short lower crankcase bolts (2).

Loosen the 10 lower crankcase bolts in the sequence as shown.
Remove and DISCARD the 10 lower crankcase bolts (2).
- Loose the lower crankcase (1) from the engine block, use a suitable tool.
- Remove the lower crankcase (1).
- NOTE:
When reading the value, do not confuse millimeters and inches on the measuring scale.
Measure the crankshaft bearing play.
- Compare the width of the flattened plastic thread (1) to the measuring scale (2).
- Permissible crankshaft bearing play, refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications .
NOTE:
Use the old bolts for this step.
