Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the 16 hydraulic valve lash adjuster arms. Refer to Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjuster Arm Replacement .
  2. Remove the 4 spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement .
  3. Remove the timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain Replacement .
  4. Install EN-51511  plug (1) to the fuel injector bore of cylinder 2.

  5. Tighten the bolt (2) of EN-51511  plug.
  6. Install the EN-49074  valve spring compressor (1) including the EN-49155  demounting piece (2) to the cylinder head.

  7. Install the EN-51150  compression / pressure adapter (1) into the spark plug thread from cylinder 2.

  8. Attach a compression air hose to the EN-51150  compression/pressure adapter.
    NOTE: Make sure that the crankshaft is in the ignition top dead center (TDC) position of cylinder 1.
  9. Apply compressed air to cylinder 2.
  10. Tap all valve spring retainers, only from cylinder 2, with an soft hammer hit. Use a rubber mallet and EN-6171  release tool (1).

  11. Scale the valve spring (3), including the upper valve spring retainers (2) down and the upper valve spring retainers until the valve keys are discharged from spring load. Use a suitable tool and a bit of grease to remove the valve keys (1).
    NOTE: The demounting piece must be applied parallel to the valve spring retainers to prevent damage to the tools or the valve train components.

  12. Remove the exhaust valve spring (1) or the intake valve spring (3) and a upper valve spring retainer (2). Which valve spring is removed, depends on the removal progress. Place it in the EN-849  assembly tray to ensure they will be installed in their original position.

    NOTE: Mind the installation position of valve springs, valve spring retainers and valve keys.
  13. Remove and DISCARD the valve stem oil seal. Use EN-840  pliers (1).

  14. Repeat the procedure for the other 3 valves form cylinder 2.
  15. Transfer the special tools as needed.
