Crankshaft and Bearing Installation

Special Tools 

EN-45059  Angle Meter

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

  1. Ensure that guide lugs (arrows) are properly seated. Note position of crankshaft thrust bearing (1), at the second crankshaft bearing from the transmission side.

  2. Install the 4 upper crankshaft bearing shells (2) and the crankshaft thrust bearing (4) into the engine block (3).

  3. Coat the crankshaft bearing shells with NEW engine oil.
  4. Insert the crankshaft (1) into the engine block (3).
  5. Install the 5 lower crankshaft bearing shells (1) into the lower crankcase (2).

    NOTE: Ensure that guide lugs are properly seated. If the old crankshaft bearing shells was reused, set it in as removed.
  6. Coat the crankshaft bearing shells with NEW engine oil.
  7. Apply a 3 mm (0.12 in) bead of sealer (2) on the lower crankcase. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants and Sealers .

    NOTE:
    • The block assembly and the lower crankcase surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • The lower crankcase must be fastened to final torque specification within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
  8. Apply an additionally 3 mm (0.12 in) bead of sealer about a length of 20 mm (0.90 in) in the outer regions (1, 3).
  9. Apply an additionally 3 mm bead of sealer about a length of 5 mm (0.20 in), in the outer region (4).
  10. Install the lower crankcase (1).

  11. Install 10 NEW lower crankcase bolts (2).
  12. Tighten the 10 NEW lower crankshaft bolts in the sequence as shown, use the EN-45059  meter.

    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
    1. First pass tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
    2. Second pass to 120 degrees.
    3. Final pass to 15 degrees.
  13. Install the 2 long lower crankcase bolts (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  14. Install the 8 short lower crankcase bolts (2) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
