Check Crankshaft Bearing Clearance (With Plastigage)

  1. Install crankshaft with the 5 upper crankshaft bearing shells at the engine block.
  2. Lay on 5 times plastigage (flexible plastic thread) axially over the entire width of the crankshaft bearing journal (1).

    NOTE: Do not rotate the crankshaft.
  3. Install the 5 lower crankshaft bearing shells.
  4. Install the lower crankcase (1).

  5. Install the 10 lower crankcase bolts (2).
    NOTE: Use the old bolts for this step.
  6. Tighten the 10 lower crankshaft bolts in the sequence as shown, use the EN-45059  meter.

    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
    1. First pass tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
    2. Second pass to 120 degrees.
  7. Install the 2 long lower crankcase bolts (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  8. Install the 8 short lower crankcase bolts (2) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
  9. Remove the crankcase.
  10. Remove the 2 long lower crankcase bolts (1).

  11. Remove the 8 short lower crankcase bolts (2).
  12. Loosen the 10 lower crankcase bolts in the sequence as shown.

  13. Remove and DISCARD the 10 lower crankcase bolts (2).

  14. Loose the lower crankcase (1) from the engine block, use a suitable tool.
  15. Remove the lower crankcase (1).
  16. Measure the crankshaft bearing play.

    NOTE: When reading the value, do not confuse millimeters and inches on the measuring scale.
    • Compare the width of the flattened plastic thread (1) to the measuring scale (2).
    • Permissible crankshaft bearing play, refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications .
