Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement .
  2. Remove the transmission range selector lever cable and bracket. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Bracket Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Fill .
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) transmission control module (TCM), then unclip the connector from the transmission.

  6. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement .
  7. Plug and/or cap the pipes and transmission to prevent contamination.
  8. Remove the transmission vent hose.
  9. Remove the wiring harness starter motor from the transmission. Remove the bolt from retainer on valve body cover. Unclip the wiring harness from retainer on valve body cover and range selector cable bracket.
  10. Remove the 3 upper transmission bolts (2).

  11. Install the J-28467-B  support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  12. Raise the vehicle.
  13. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement .
  14. Disconnect the left front wheel drive shaft from transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side .
  15. Disconnect the right front wheel drive shaft from transmission. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side (without Intermediate Shaft) and Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side (with Intermediate Shaft) .
  16. Remove the transmission rear mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear .
  17. Remove the transmission front mount from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement .
  18. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (1.8L LUW and LWE) .

  19. Remove the flap (2) from the transmission.
  20. Remove and DISCARD the 3 flex plate to torque converter bolts (1).
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Remove and DISCARD the 3 left transmission mount bolts from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side .
  23. Lower the engine and the transmission on the left hand side with the J-28467-B  support fixture to allow clearance for removal.
  24. Raise the vehicle.
  25. Use the transmission jack to support the transmission.
  26. Remove the transmission bolts (1, 3, 4) and the nut (5).

  27. Separate the transmission from the engine.
    NOTE: Insure the torque converter remains securely in place on the transmission input shaft while separating and removing the transmission.
  28. Lower the transmission with the transmission jack and remove the transmission.
  29. Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .
