Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
NOTE:
  • If you were not referred to this test from another diagnostic, do not perform this procedure.
  • Only perform this test when the fuel temperature is warmer than 18°C (65°F).
  1. Install the CH-50378  Injector Return Leakage Test Adapter and the CH-50377  Injector Return Line Cap to any one of the fuel injectors.
  2. Connect the yellow hose from the J-45873-100  Fuel Volume Test Kit to the J-45873-30  Injector Flow Test Adapter.
  3. Connect the J-45873-30  Injector Flow Test Adapter with yellow hose to the fuel injector leakage adaptor and install the retaining clip.
  4. Install the yellow hose in one of the J-45873-100  Fuel Volume Test Kit graduated cylinders.
  5. Idle or crank the engine until fuel starts dripping into the graduated cylinder and the yellow hose is full of fuel.
    NOTE:

    If the engine does not start, crank the engine in 15 second intervals, with 1 minute cooling time between intervals, until fuel starts to flow into the graduated cylinder.

    The engine cranking speed must be more than 150 RPM during the cranking portion of this test.

  6. Elevate the yellow hose to retain the fuel in the hose and empty the graduated cylinder into a suitable container. Return the yellow hose to the empty graduated cylinder.
  7. Idle or crank the engine for 15 s.
  8. Measure and record the quantity of fuel in the graduated cylinder. Repeat this process for each fuel injector.
    NOTE: During replacement of the injectors, inspect the inlet and outlet fittings for corrosion or contamination. Refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis .
    NOTE: Step 8 must be repeated for each fuel injector.
    • If any fuel injector is greater than 3 ml 

      Replace the appropriate Q17 Fuel Injectors and proceed to the next step.

    • If 3 ml or less for each injector 
  9. Install and connect all fuel system components that were previously removed or disconnected.
  10. Start and idle the engine. Command the fuel pressure to 58 MPa (8412 psi) with a scan tool. The Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor parameter should be the same as the commanded pressure.
    • If the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor parameter is less than 58 MPa (8412 psi) when commanded 

      Replace the G18 High Pressure Fuel Pump.

    • If the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor parameter is equal to 58 MPa (8412 psi) when commanded 
  11. All OK.
