Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
  2. Ignition ON.
  3. Verify a test lamp illuminates between the Battery Positive Voltage circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is good 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the test lamp.
    2. Test for less than 2Ω in the battery positive voltage circuit end to end.
      • If 2Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2Ω, verify the fuse is not open and there is voltage at the fuse.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is open 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the test lamp.
    2. Test for infinite resistance between the battery positive voltage circuit and ground.
      • If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance, replace the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
    • If the test lamp illuminates 
  4. Ignition OFF, connect the X1 harness connector at the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
  5. Disconnect the harness connector at each E12 Glow Plug.
  6. Ignition ON.
  7. Using the scan tool, verify that the Glow Plug Command Signal parameter displays OFF. It may take up to 1 min for the parameter to display OFF at key up.
    NOTE: If a short to voltage is indicated the appropriate glow plug(s) must be inspected for damage.
  8. Test for 0.0 V between each glow plug supply voltage circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    • If greater than 0.0 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K34 Glow Plug Control Module
    2. Ignition ON, test for 0.0 V between the appropriate glow plug supply voltage circuit and ground.
      • If greater than 0.0 V, repair the short to voltage in the glow plug supply voltage circuit.
      • If 0.0 V, replace the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
    • If 0.0 V 
  9. Using a scan tool, verify the following parameters are less than 1.83 Ω:
    • Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Resistance
    • Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Resistance
    • Cylinder 3 Glow Plug Resistance
    • Cylinder 4 Glow Plug Resistance
    • If greater than 1.83 Ω 

      Test the appropriate Glow Plug Supply Voltage circuit for high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the appropriate E12 Glow Plug.

    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X2 harness connector at the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
    2. Disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate E12 Glow Plug.
    3. Test for less than 2 Ω between the glow plug supply voltage circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open or high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the appropriate E12 Glow Plug.
    • If less than 1.83 Ω 
  10. Ignition OFF.
  11. Disconnect the X2 harness connector at the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
  12. Ignition ON.
  13. Verify a test lamp illuminates between the run/crank ignition 1 voltage circuit terminal 33 and ground.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is good 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the test lamp.
    2. Test for less than 2Ω in the run/crank ignition 1 circuit end to end.
      • If 2Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2Ω, verify the fuse is OK and there is voltage at the fuse.
    • If the test lamp does not illuminate and the circuit fuse is open 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the test lamp.
    2. Test for infinite resistance between the run/crank ignition 1 circuit and ground.
      • If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground in the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance, replace the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
    • If the test lamp illuminates 
  14. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 min for all vehicle systems to power down.
  15. Test for less than 10 Ω between the signal ground circuit terminal 10 and ground.
    • If 10 Ω or greater 
    1. Test for less than 2Ω in the ground circuit end to end.
      • If 2Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2Ω, repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • If less than 10 Ω 
  16. Test for less than 10 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 8 and ground.
    • If 10 Ω or greater 
    1. Test for less than 2Ω in the ground circuit end to end.
      • If 2Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2Ω, repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • If less than 10 Ω 
  17. Replace the K34 Glow Plug Control Module.
