Circuit/System Testing

NOTE:
- You must perform Circuit/System Verification before proceeding with Circuit/System Testing.
- Engine OFF.NOTE: At engine start, fuel pressure regulator 2 controls fuel pressure at idle. The engine will remain in this mode if the fuel temperature is below 15°C (59°F) or until fuel pressure regulator 2 adapts (which occurs at higher engine loads) or until fuel temperature reaches 60°C (140°F). Once the adaptation is complete, the vehicle will use fuel pressure regulator 1 to control rail pressure.
- Remove the fuel pressure regulator 2 return hose and plug the hose to prevent fuel leakage.
- Install a section of rubber fuel hose on the fuel pressure regulator 2 outlet and place the loose end of hose into a clean fuel container.
- Engine idling.
- Fuel temperature must be greater than 15°C (59°F)
- Using the scan tool, command the Fuel Rail Pressure to 60 MPa (8702 psi) for 15 seconds. This allows the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 adaptation process to complete.
- Engine at a stable idle.
- Engine at normal operating temperature.
- Slowly increase engine speed to 1700 RPM and then back to idle within 15 s.NOTE: Engine speed greater than 1800 RPM will cause incorrect test results.
- Observe the volume of fuel from fuel pressure regulator 2. The volume of fuel should be less than 10 ml (0.4 oz).NOTE: Measure only the amount of fuel that leaks after the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 adaptation process has completed.
- If greater than 10 ml (0.4 oz)
Replace the Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly.
- If less than 10 ml (0.4 oz)
- If greater than 10 ml (0.4 oz)
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the harness connector at the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2.
- Measure the current at Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 by using jumper wires and test terminals to connect a DMM between the wiring harness connector terminal 1 and the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 terminal 1.NOTE: The test leads at the DMM must be in the "A" and "COM" input ports and the DMM selector switch in the mA position on the DC scale or incorrect diagnosis will occur.
- Use another jumper wire to connect the wiring harness connector terminal 2 and the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 terminal 2.
- Fuel temperature must be greater than 15°C (59°F)
- Using the scan tool, command the Fuel Rail Pressure to 60 MPa (8702 psi) for 15 seconds. This allows the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 adaptation process to complete.
- Engine at stable idle, verify the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 current is within 601 mA-1078 mA.
- If the current is less than 601 mA NOTE: This step may require use of a magnifying glass.
Inspect for contaminates in the Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Filter Screen. For screen location, refer to Fuel System Description . If contaminates are present, refer to Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis . If no contaminates are present, replace the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2.
- If the current is greater than 1078 mA
Verify the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 is properly torqued. If properly torqued, replace the Q18B Fuel Pressure Regulator 2.
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not set. If the DTC sets, refer to Fuel System Diagnosis - High Pressure Side .
- If current is within 601 mA-1078 mA
- If the current is less than 601 mA
- If the system test normal, refer to Diagnostic Aids .
