Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 Chevrolet Trax and 2015 Buick Encore. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Steering Column Lower Trim Cover Replacement (Encore) Steering Column Lower Trim Cover Replacement (Trax)  Remove
    2. CAUTION:

    With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

    • The steering column
    • The intermediate shaft(s)
    • The steering gear

    After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has become un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

  2. With the steering wheel in the straight ahead position, LOCK the steering column.
  3. Instrument Panel Knee Bolster Inner Bracket Replacement Remove
  4. Floor Front Air Outlet Duct Replacement - Left Side (Encore)Floor Front Air Outlet Duct Replacement - Left Side (Trax) Remove
  5. Disconnect any electrical connectors as necessary.
  6. Place match marks on the intermediate steering shaft lower universal joint and the intermediate steering shaft to aid in installation.
  7. Place match marks on the intermediate steering shaft lower universal joint and the steering gear shaft to aid in installation.

  8. Intermediate Steering Shaft Middle Bolt - Remove
  9. Intermediate Steering Shaft Lower Bolt - Remove
    10. NOTE:

    If the intermediate steering shaft lower universal joint is difficult to separate, insert a wide blade flat screw driver and tap with a hammer to open up the slots as necessary.

  10. Remove the intermediate steering shaft lower universal joint (3) from the vehicle.
  11. Place match marks on the intermediate steering shaft upper universal joint and the steering column shaft.

  12. Intermediate Steering Shaft Upper Bolt (2) - Remove
    13. NOTE:

    If the intermediate steering shaft upper universal joint is difficult to separate, insert a wide blade flat screw driver and tap with a hammer to open up the slot as necessary.

  13. Intermediate Steering Shaft Upper Universal Joint (1) to Steering Column - Separate
  14. Remove the intermediate steering shaft and upper universal joint (2) from the vehicle.
  15. If replacing the intermediate steering shaft, copy the match marks from the OLD shaft to the NEW shaft.
