Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement (N40)

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Steering Gear Replacement (N40) 
  2. Steering Gear Boot Replacement 
1 Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod
CAUTION:

Do not change the steering gear preload adjustment before moving the inner tie rod from the steering gear. Changing the steering gear preload adjustment before moving the inner tie rod could result in damage to the pinion and the steering gear.

Procedure

  1. Bend the tabs on the steering linkage inner tie rod washer to release the steering linkage inner tie rod.
  2. Place a pipe wrench on the flats of the steering gear rack. Position the pipe wrench between the steering gear housing and the steering linkage inner tie rod housing.
  3. Place a wrench on the flats of the steering linkage inner tie rod housing.
  4. Rotate the steering linkage inner tie rod housing counterclockwise to remove the steering linkage inner tie rod from the steering gear rack.
  5. Remove the steering linkage inner tie rod washer from the steering gear rack.

    DISCARD the washer.

  6. Install the NEW steering linkage inner tie rod washer on the steering gear rack.
  7. Rotate the steering linkage inner tie rod housing clockwise to install the steering linkage inner tie rod to the steering gear rack.
  8. Bend the tabs on the steering linkage inner tie rod washer to secure the steering linkage inner tie rod.

Tighten 
88 N.m (65 lb ft)
