Circuit/System Testing
- If sent here from DTC P0300-P0308 , continue with testing. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool DTC information.
- Verify with a scan tool that no DTCs are set.
- If a DTC is set
Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle for further diagnosis.
- If a DTC is not set
- If a DTC is set
- Engine idling at the normal operating temperature.
- Verify there is no abnormal engine noise.
- If there is an abnormal engine noise
Refer to Symptoms - Engine Mechanical for further diagnosis.
- If no abnormal engine noise
- If there is an abnormal engine noise
- Verify the Cylinder Deactivation (Active Fuel Management) System Compression Test
passes the compression test.
- If compression test failed
Test the Q43 Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly. Refer to Cylinder Deactivation (Active Fuel Management) Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Diagnosis and Testing .
- If compression test passes
- If compression test failed
- Ignition OFF, remove the Q43 Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly ignition fuse from the underhood fuse block.
- Ignition ON, probe each terminal of the fuse connection at the underhood fuse block with a test lamp connected to ground. The test lamp should not illuminate on the circuit that needs to be tested.
- Connect a DMM between the fuse terminal being tested and the K20 Engine Control Module housing.
- Ignition ON, command each Cylinder 1, 4, 6, and 7 Deactivation Solenoid ON and OFF with the scan tool.
- Verify the resistance of each solenoid is between 11-18 Ω with the solenoid commanded ON.
- If greater than 18 Ω for all cylinder deactivation solenoids , test the ignition circuit for an open/high resistance.
- Ignition OFF.
- Test for less than 2 Ω on the ignition circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, refer to Cylinder Deactivation (Active Fuel Management) Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Diagnosis and Testing .
- If greater than 18 Ω for one or more but not all cylinder deactivation solenoids
- Ignition OFF.
- Test for less than 2 Ω on the appropriate control circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω
- Test for 11-18 Ω between the ignition circuit and the appropriate control circuit at the Q43 Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly.
- If not between 11-18 Ω, test or replace the Q43 Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Assembly.
- If between 11-18 Ω, test or replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
- If between 11-18 Ω
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions of the customer's concern while monitoring the Cylinder Deactivation Inhibit parameters.
- Verify all Cylinder Deactivation Inhibit parameters display NO.
- If any parameter displays YES
Refer to the appropriate vehicle system to determine the cause for cylinder deactivation inhibit.
- Symptoms - Engine Controls (L99, LS3, LS7) Symptoms - Engine Controls (LSA)
- Symptoms - Engine Cooling
- Symptoms - Engine Electrical
- Symptoms - Engine Mechanical
- If none of the parameters display YES
- If any parameter displays YES
- Refer to Cylinder Deactivation (Active Fuel Management) Valve Lifter Oil Manifold Diagnosis and Testing .
The engine oil level and the oil pressure are critical to the correct operation of the Cylinder Deactivation System. Verify that the engine has the correct oil level and the correct oil pressure before continuing with this diagnostic. Refer to Oil Pressure Diagnosis and Testing , . Inspect the valve lifter oil filter for a restriction or blockage. Refer to Valve Lifter Oil Filter Replacement .
