Propeller Shaft Center Support Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)
Special Tools
* DT-22912-B Bearing Remover
* DT-46496 Bearing Installer
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools Tools and Equipment.
Removal Procedure
1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (195/218mm Axle) Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (195/218mm Axle)Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (250mm Axle) Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (250mm Axle).
Note: Reference mark the relationship of the front propeller shaft to the slip yoke for assembly. Failure to properly maintain the front propeller shaft to slip yoke relationship could result in propeller shaft imbalance.
3. Reference mark the notch (1) in the front propeller shaft and between the 2 notches (2) on the slip yoke.
4. Separate the front propeller shaft (1) and the slip yoke boot (2) from the slip yoke (3).
5. Inspect the slip yoke boot for damage and replace, if necessary.
Note: Reference the center support bearing orientation for proper installation.
6. Install the DT-22912-B remover (1) behind the center support bearing.
Note: Do not clamp against the propeller shaft tube.
7. Support the DT-22912-B remover and press the rear propeller shaft from the center support bearing.
8. Remove any corrosion from the rear propeller shaft bearing surface (1).
9. Clean and inspect the front propeller shaft splines (2) for excessive wear or damage and replace, if necessary.
10. Clean and inspect the rear propeller shaft splines (3) for excessive wear or damage and replace, if necessary.
11. Lubricate the front and rear propeller shaft splines with GM approved lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations [1][2]Fluid Type Specifications.
Installation Procedure
Note: Do not clamp against the propeller shaft tube.
1. Install the DT-22912-B remover (1) to the rear propeller shaft with the cupped portion of the DT-22912-B remover supporting the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke.
Note: Maintain the center support bearing orientation as noted during removal.
2. Place the center support bearing on the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke.
3. Using the DT-46496 installer (2), press the center support bearing (3) until the inner race is seated squarely against the shoulder of the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke.
4. Install the front propeller shaft (1) to the slip yoke boot (2).
5. Ensure the slip yoke boot is fully seated in the front propeller shaft retention groove.
6. Align the reference mark on the front propeller shaft to the mark on the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke (3).
7. Maintain the front propeller shaft alignment mark (1) to the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke alignment mark (2) and install the front propeller shaft to the rear propeller shaft.
8. Seat the slip joint boot fully on the rear propeller shaft slip joint yoke.
9. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (195/218mm Axle) Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (195/218mm Axle)Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (250mm Axle) Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (250mm Axle).
