Removal Procedure

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Splash Shield Replacement
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Remove the timing belt upper front cover. Refer to Timing Belt Upper Front Cover Removal (1.6L LDE, LXV, 1.8L 2H0, and LUW) .
  6. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT .
  7. Detach the engine wiring harness from intake manifold, cylinder head cover and engine wiring harness bracket.
  8. Remove the coolant expansion tank closure cap.
  9. Remove the oil dipstick.

  11. Set up the crankshaft.
  12. Move the crankshaft in the direction of the engine rotation to the first cylinder TDC position (mark 1).

  14. Apply guidance marks.
  15. Attach 3 markings (2) as an aid to one of the camshaft adjusters, each one offset by 90° to the marking applied (1).
