DTC 85-79: OPDS Sensor Initial Check Failure

  1. Clear the DTC memory (see HOW TO CLEAR DTCS  ).
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

    Does the SRS indicator go off? 

    YES  -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures (see TROUBLESHOOTING INTERMITTENT FAILURES  ).

    NO  -Go to step 3.

  3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  4. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat, and make sure nothing is in the seat-back pocket.
  5. Clear the DTC memory (see HOW TO CLEAR DTCS  ).
  6. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

    Does the SRS indicator go off? 

    YES  -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures (see TROUBLESHOOTING INTERMITTENT FAILURES  ).

    NO  -Go to step 7.

  7. Do the ODS unit initialization (see ODS UNIT INITIALIZATION  ).
  8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

    Does the SRS indicator go off? 

    YES  -The system is OK at this time.

    NO  -Replace the ODS unit (see ODS UNIT REPLACEMENT  ), then clear the DTC and retest. If the DTC is still present, replace the OPDS sensor/front passenger's seat-back cover/pad (see FRONT SEAT-BACK COVER REPLACEMENT ).
