DTC P1440 (57): Motor Power Inverter (MPI) module Output Circuit Malfunction
- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).
- If the DTC cannot be cleared, do the troubleshooting for DTC 111204(55).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS (see DTC CLEAR ).
- Check under these conditions:
- Headlights on high beam
- Blower fan at maximum speed
- Rear window defogger on
- Start the engine, and let it idle 1 minute.
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P0A3F(89), P0A5E(24), P0A5F(25), P0A61 (26), P0A62 (27), P0A64 (28), P0A65 (29), P0BE6 (86), P0BEA (87), P0BEE (88), or P0BFD (30) indicated?
YES -Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO -go to step 6.
- Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P1440 (57) in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES -Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.
NO -If the screen indicates FAILED, go to step 7. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 3.
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Turn the battery module switch OFF (see DISCONNECTING THE MOTOR POWER CABLE CONNECTOR FROM THE MOTOR STATOR ).
- Remove the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the PCU lid (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Check the connections at IMA motor power cables A, B, and C.

Are the connections OK?
YES -go to step 12.
NO -Repair the connections, then go to step 25.
- Remove the IMA motor power cables from the phase motor current sensor.
- Check for continuity between IMA motor power cables A and B, and then between cables A and C.
Is there continuity?
YES -go to step 17.
NO -go to step 14.
- Connect jumper wires between IMA motor power cables A and B, and A and C.
- Disconnect the IMA motor power cable connector (A).NOTE:
- Refer to disconnecting the IMA motor power cable connector from the motor stator (see DISCONNECTING THE MOTOR POWER CABLE CONNECTOR FROM THE MOTOR STATOR ).
- If the IMA motor power cable terminals are wet, dry them with a clean shop towel. Do not use compressed air.
- Check for continuity between IMA motor power cable terminals A and B, and then between terminals A and C.
Is there continuity?
YES -Replace the IMA motor housing (see DRAIN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step 25.
NO -Replace the IMA motor power cables (see IPU MODULE AIR DUCT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step 25.
- Reconnect the IMA motor power cable connector.
- Remove the PCU busplate and the PCU cover (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Disconnect the MPI module 12P connector (A).
- Disconnect MCM connector C (22P).
- Check for continuity between these terminals:
- MCM connector terminal C15 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 8.
- MCM connector terminal C22 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 2.
- MCM connector terminal C21 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 9.
- MCM connector terminal C7 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 3.
- MCM connector terminal C14 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 10.
- MCM connector terminal C6 and MPI module 12P connector terminal No. 4.

Is there continuity?
YES -go to step 22.
NO -Repair an open in the wire between the MPI module 12P connector and the MCM (C6, C7, C14, C15, C21, C22), then go to step 25.
- Check for continuity between body ground and these MCM connector C (22P) terminals individually.
- C6
- C7
- C14
- C15
- C21
- C22

Is there continuity?
YES -Repair a short in the wire between the MPI module 12P connector and the MCM (C6, C7, C14, C15, C20, C22), then go to step 25.
NO -go to step 23.
- Reconnect MCM connector C (22P).
- Measure the resistance between body ground and these MCM connector C (22P) terminals individually:
- C6
- C7
- C14
- C15
- C21
- C22

Is there about 10 kΩ?
YES -Replace the MPI module (see MOTOR POWER INVERTER (MPI) MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then go to step 25.
NO -go to step 34.
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Reinstall the PCU cover, the PCU busplate, and the PCU lid (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Reinstall the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then turn the battery module switch ON (see DISCONNECTING THE MOTOR POWER CABLE CONNECTOR FROM THE MOTOR STATOR ).
- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
- Clear the DTC with the HDS (see DTC CLEAR ).
- Check under these conditions:
- Headlights on high beam
- Blower fan at maximum speed
- Rear window defogger on
- Start the engine, and let it idle 1 minute.
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P1440 (57) indicated?
YES -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the MPI module, the IMA motor power cable, and the MCM, then go to step 1.
NO -go to step 33.
- Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P1440 (57) in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES -Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were indicated in step 32, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO -If the screen indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the MPI module, the IMA motor power cable, and the MCM, then go to step 1. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 30.
- Reconnect all connectors.
- Reinstall the PCU cover, the PCU busplate, and the PCU lid (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Reinstall the IPU cover (see IPU COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ), then turn the battery module switch ON (see DISCONNECTING THE MOTOR POWER CABLE CONNECTOR FROM THE MOTOR STATOR ).
- Update the MCM if it does not have the latest software (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) UPDATE ), or substitute a known-good MCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM ).
- Check under these conditions:
- Headlights on high beam
- Blower fan at maximum speed
- Rear window defogger on
- Start the engine, and let it idle 1 minute.
- Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.
Is DTC P1440 (57) indicated?
YES -Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the MPI module, the IMA motor power cable, and the MCM. If the MCM was updated, substitute a known-good MCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM ), and recheck. If the MCM was substituted, go to step 1.
NO -go to step 41.
- Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P1440 (57) in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.
Does the screen indicate PASSED?
YES -If the MCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the MCM was substituted, replace the original MCM (see MOTOR CONTROL MODULE (MCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ). If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were indicated in step 40, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.
NO -If the screen indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the MPI module, the IMA motor power cable, and the MCM. If the MCM was updated, substitute a known-good MCM (see SUBSTITUTING THE MCM ), and recheck. If the MCM was substituted, go to step 1. If the screen indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 38.
