Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement .
  3. Discharge the air conditioning (A/C) system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  4. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  5. Remove the front tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  6. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  7. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (LS3, L99 Static Fill) or Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716) .

  8. Drain the engine oil from the oil pan..
  9. Install the drain plugs to the oil pan and tighten.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Remove the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement .
  12. Disconnect the heater core hose from the quick disconnect fittings on the engine, then position out of the way.
  13. Remove the positive cable from the jump start location.
  14. Disconnect the engine to body ground wire from the engine assembly.
  15. Disconnect the air conditioning suction line from the cowl.
  16. Disconnect the cables and harnesses from the underhood electrical center.
  17. Remove the powertrain control module from the PCM bracket, then position toward engine assembly.
  18. Disconnect the fuel feed line from the engine assembly.
  19. Disconnect the evaporator line from the engine assembly.
  20. Disconnect the air conditioning liquid line from the condenser assembly.
  21. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  22. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  23. Remove the front fascia. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  24. Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  25. Disconnect the front lower control arm ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Front Lower Control Rear Arm Replacement .
  26. Disconnect the rear lower control arm ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Front Lower Control Front Arm Replacement .
  27. Secure the front of the vehicle to the hoist.
  28. Install J 39580  under the frame.
  29. Lower the vehicle to the frame support table.
  30. Remove the six frame mounting bolts.
  31. With the aid of an assistant, carefully raise the body from the frame.
  32. Ensure when raising the body the following items are clear from the frame:
    • Steering knuckles
    • Electrical wiring harnesses
    • Power steering pipes
  33. Remove the engine mount fasteners.
  34. Disconnect all necessary hoses and electrical connectors from the engine assembly.
  35. using a suitable engine lifting device, remove the engine from the frame.
