Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement (8.0/8.6 Inch Axle)

Removal Procedure

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Clean the area around the rear axle fill plug.
3. Remove the rear axle fill plug.
4. Remove the rear axle cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.0/8.6 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.0/8.6 Inch Axle))Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle)).
5. Drain the lubricant into a suitable container.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the rear axle cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.0/8.6 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (8.0/8.6 Inch Axle))Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) (Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle)).
2. Fill the rear axle with axle lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities () and Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers ().





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

3. Install the rear axle fill plug.

Tighten the rear axle fill plug to 33 Nm (24 lb ft).

4. Lower the vehicle.
