Installation Procedure

    IMPORTANT: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:
    • Change the engine oil.
    • Change the engine oil filter.
    • Add GM Engine Oil Supplement to the engine oil. Refer to Sealers, Adhesives, and Lubricants  for the correct part number.
  1. Apply clean engine oil, or engine oil supplement or equivalent to the following components:
    • The engine camshaft lobes
    • The camshaft bearing journals
    • The camshaft bearings
  2. Refer to Sealers, Adhesives, and Lubricants  for the correct part number.
  3. Install three 5/16-18 x 4.0 inch bolts into the engine camshaft front bolt holes.
  4. Use the bolts as a handle in order to install the engine camshaft.
  5. Remove the 3 bolts from the front of the engine camshaft.

  6. If reusing the fasteners, apply threadlock to the threads of the camshaft retainer bolts. Refer to Sealers, Adhesives, and Lubricants  for the correct part number.
    7. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
  7. Install the camshaft retainer and bolts.

    Tighten:  Tighten the camshaft retainer bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the balance shaft drive gear. Refer to Balance Shaft Replacement  for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.
  9. Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and/or Tensioner Replacement .
  10. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  11. Install the A/C condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement .
  12. Install the engine cooling fan. Refer to Fan Replacement .
  13. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (Gas) .
  14. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (Static Fill) or Draining and Filling Cooling System (Vac N Fill) .
  15. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  16. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
