Starter Motor Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L): Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Savana Special, 2003 GMC Savana Camper Special, 2003 GMC Savana, 2003 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 2003 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the right transmission cover bolt. See Fig 1.
  3. Remove the starter bolts. See Fig 2. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.
  4. Remove the starter solenoid nut. See Fig 3. Remove the starter lead from the solenoid stud.
  5. Remove the starter lead nut. Remove the positive cable from the starter stud. Place the starter on a workbench.
  6. Unsnap the transmission cover from the starter. See Fig 4.
  7. If necessary, remove the starter shield. See Fig 5.
