Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Cadillac CTS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.
  1. Remove the left side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .

    IMPORTANT: Place scribe marks on the intermediate steering shaft and the upper intermediate steering shaft prior to removal. These marks will be used for the correct alignment during installation.
  3. Remove the intermediate steering shaft bolt.
  4. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the upper intermediate steering shaft.
  5. Remove the left side instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement - Left Side .

    IMPORTANT: Place scribe marks on the steering column and the upper intermediate steering shaft prior to removal. These marks will be used for the correct alignment during installation.
  7. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft bolt (1) at the steering column and disconnect the upper intermediate steering shaft (2) from the steering column.
  8. Do not unseat the intermediate steering shaft lower seal (3) from its place.
  9. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft from the vehicle.
