Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement - Upper and to Fan Shroud Replacement - Lower in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the generator mounting bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L) in Engine Electrical.
  6. Remove the generator mounting bracket stud from the cylinder head.
  7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement - Lower .
  8. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (4.3L) or Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L) in Engine Exhaust.

  10. Remove the ground wires at the rear of the cylinder head.
  11. Remove the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  13. Remove the spark plugs.

  15. Remove the rear bolt and the spark plug wire support.

  17. Remove the cylinder head bolts.

  19. Remove the cylinder head.

  21. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.

  23. Remove the dowel pins (cylinder head locator), if required.
  24. Clean the engine block and the cylinder head sealing surfaces.
  25. NOTE: Clean all dirt, debris, and coolant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes. Failure to remove all foreign material may result in damaged threads, improperly tightened fasteners or damage to components.
  26. Clean the cylinder head bolts and the engine block bolt holes.
  27. For further service to the cylinder head refer to the following: Cylinder Head Disassemble , Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection , Valve Guide Reaming/Valve and Seat Grinding  or Cylinder Head Assemble .
