Filling Procedure

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2004 GMC Yukon XL, 2004 GMC Yukon, 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2004 Cadillac Escalade EXT. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: The procedure below must be followed. Improper coolant level could result in a low or high coolant level condition, causing engine damage.
  1. Install the lower radiator hose to the radiator.
  2. Using the J 38185  reposition the lower radiator hose clamp.
  3. If the left and right engine block coolant drain plugs were removed, perform the following.
    1. Apply pipe sealer to the drain plugs.
    2. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
    3. Install the drain plugs.

      Tighten:  Tighten the drain plugs to 60 N.m (44 lb ft).

  4. Install the engine block coolant heater, if equipped. Refer to Coolant Heater Replacement (Dealer Installation - 6.0L Engine)  or Coolant Heater Replacement (4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L Engines)  or Coolant Heater Replacement (8.1L Engine) .
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Open the cooling system bleeder screws.
  7. IMPORTANT: Use a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL antifreeze and clean, drinkable water.
  8. Slowly fill the cooling system with a 50/50 coolant mixture. Refer to Capacities - Approximate Fluid in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  9. Close the cooling system bleeder screws.
  10. Install the coolant pressure cap.
  11. Start the engine.
  12. Run the engine at 2,000-2,500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
  13. Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
  14. Shut the engine OFF.
  15. Allow the engine to cool.
  16. Top off the coolant as necessary.
  17. Inspect the concentration of the engine coolant using the J 26568 .
  18. Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.
