Brake Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Did you review the brake warning system circuit description and perform the necessary inspections? If so, go to next step. If not, go to BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION  under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION.
  2. With the ignition switch ON, observe the brake warning indicator and perform a brake warning system test by meeting each of the conditions described in BRAKE WARNING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION  under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION. Did the brake indicator illuminate for each condition? If so, problem is intermittent. If not, go to next step.
  3. Is the brake indicator completely inoperative in all conditions? If so, go to step  18 . If not, go to next step.
  4. Did the brake indicator illuminate with the float manually held down? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  7 .
  5. Did the brake indicator illuminate with the parking brake applied? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  10 .
  6. Did the brake indicator illuminate with the ignition switch in START? If so, problem is intermittent. If not, go to step  15 .
  7. Disconnect the brake fluid level switch connector. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the brake indicator control circuit and the ground circuit. Turn ON the ignition switch. Does the brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace the brake fluid reservoir (which contains the fluid level switch). See MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete the repair? If so, go to step  19 .
  9. Test the ground circuit of the brake fluid level switch for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so , go to step  19 . If not, go to step  17 .
  10. Disconnect the park brake switch connector. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the park brake signal circuit and ground. Turn ON the ignition switch. Does the brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace the park brake switch. See PARK BRAKE SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step  19 .
  12. Disconnect the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) control module connector. DRL control module is located under instrument panel, to right of steering column. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the brake indicator control circuit and chassis ground. Turn ON the ignition switch. Does the brake indicator illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  17 .
  13. Test the park brake signal circuit for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  19 . If not, go to next step.
  14. Replace the DRL control module. DRL control module is located under instrument panel, to right of steering column. After repair, go to step  19 .
  15. Disconnect Gray 9-pin connector C203 (main harness to main switch, left lower side of instrument panel near junction block). Test the ignition switch for continuity in the START position. Is the circuit continuous? If so, go to step  17 . If not, go to next step.
  16. Replace the ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repair, go to step  19 .
  17. Test the control circuit of the brake indicator for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  19 . If not, go to next step.
  18. Repair/replace the instrument cluster printed circuit. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repair, go to next step.
  19. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, then system is okay. If not, go to step  3 .
