Park Brake Cable: Removal

  1. Verify the park brake lever is in the released position. Remove the 4 screws (1,3,4,6), the 2 clips (2,5), and lift up the console. See Figure . If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, disconnect the power mode selector switch connector. If the vehicle has an auxiliary power outlet, disconnect the auxiliary power outlet connector.
  2. Disconnect the park brake switch connector.
  3. Remove the park brake cable lock nut. See Figure . Remove the appropriate park brake cable from the equalizer. See Fig 1 . Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the appropriate tire and wheel assembly. Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUMS  . If brake drum is difficult to remove, back off automatic adjustment pawl. Insert two 8 mm bolts into drum and tighten until drum comes off.
  5. Turn the brake shoe hold-down pins in order to release the brake shoe hold-down springs. See Figure . Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
  6. Remove the following components:
    • The Upper Return Spring
    • The Strut
    • The Adjuster
    • The Adjuster Lever
    • The Adjuster Spring
    • The Strut Spring
    • The Pawl Lever
    • The Lower Return Spring
    See Figure .
  7. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake shoe lever. See Fig 2 .
  8. NOTE: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification.
  9. Squeeze the park brake cable stopper ring in order to remove the cable from the backing plate. See Fig 2 . Remove the 3 park brake retainer bolts and the 3 park brake retainers. Remove the park brake cable and the grommet from the vehicle.
