Park Brake Cable: Installation

  1. Install the park brake cable and the grommet to the vehicle.
  2. Install the 3 park brake retainers and the 3 park brake retainer bolts in order to retain the cable to the vehicle. Tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    3. NOTE: The color ring on the park brake cable is for identification. Verify the NEW park brake cable has the same color on the ring as the old park brake cable.
  3. Install the park brake cable stopper ring and the park brake cable to the backing plate. See Figure .
  4. Install the park brake cable spring and the nipple end to the park brake shoe lever. See Figure .
  5. Install the lower return spring. See Figure . Install the following components:
    • The Upper Return Spring
    • The Strut
    • The Adjuster
    • The Adjuster Lever
    • The Adjuster Spring
    • The Strut Spring
    • The Pawl Lever
  6. Install the brake shoe hold-down springs. See Figure . Turn the brake shoe hold-down pins in order to retain the brake shoe hold-down springs. Install the appropriate brake drum. Refer to BRAKE DRUMS  . Install the appropriate rear tire and wheel assembly. Tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Lower the vehicle.
    7. NOTE: The equalizer must be within 15 degrees of perpendicular to the park brake lever cable.
  7. Install the equalizer to the park brake cable. See Figure . Install the pin in order to retain the cable to the equalizer. Install the park brake cable lock nut. See Figure .
  8. Connect the park brake switch connector. Adjust the park brake system. Refer to PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  in PARK BRAKE SYSTEM under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS.
  9. Position the console over the shift knob. If the vehicle has an auxiliary power outlet, connect the auxiliary power outlet connector. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, connect the power mode selector switch connector. Install the console. Install the 4 screws (1,3,4,6) and the 2 clips (2,5). See Figure .
