Park Brake Adjustment

  1. Pull the park brake lever with approximately 40 lbs. (20 kg) of force. Count the number of clicks or ratchet notches. The minimum number of clicks is 5. The maximum number of clicks is 7.
  2. Verify that the park brake prevents the vehicle from moving. Proceed to next step if park brake needs further adjustment.
  3. Press the brake pedal 3 times with 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force using the Brake Pedal Effort Gauge (J-28662). Pull the park brake lever several times with approximately 40 lbs. (20 kg) of force.
  4. Release the park brake.
  5. Remove the 4 screws and 2 clips and lift up the center console.
  6. Inspect the park brake lever notches. If the notches are damaged or worn, replace the park brake lever. See PARK BRAKE LEVER ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, disconnect the power normal switch connector.
  8. If the vehicle has an auxiliary power outlet, disconnect the auxiliary power outlet connector.
  9. Disconnect the park brake switch connector. Loosen or tighten the park brake cable lock nut in order to adjust the park brake lever travel.
  10. Inspect the park brake lever travel. If the park brake lever travel is not in the specifications, adjust the drum brakes. See DRUM BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  .
  11. If the park brake cable is damaged, replace the park brake cable. See PARK BRAKE CABLE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  12. Connect the park brake switch connector. Position the console over the shift knob.
  13. If the vehicle has an auxiliary power outlet, connect the auxiliary power outlet connector.
  14. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, connect the power normal switch connector.
  15. Install the console. Install the 4 screws. See Fig 1 .
