Brake Rotor Assembled Lateral RUNOUT (LRO) Measurement

  1. Measure the brake rotor thickness. See BRAKE ROTOR THICKNESS MEASUREMENT  .
  2. Measure the brake rotor thickness variation. See BRAKE ROTOR THICKNESS VARIATION  .
  3. Use paint in order to mark the position of the brake rotor on the hub.
  4. Remove the brake rotor from the vehicle. See DISC BRAKE ROTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. NOTE: Rust or contaminants on the hub flange or on the brake rotor mating surfaces may cause excessive lateral runout of the brake rotor, which could lead to brake pulsation.
  6. Inspect the mating surface of the hub flange and the brake rotor. If rust or foreign particles are on the hub flange or on the brake rotor mating surfaces, perform the following steps:
    • Using the Wheel Hub Resurfacing Kit (J-42450-A), or equivalent, thoroughly clean any rust or contaminants from the mating surface of the hub flange.
    • Using the Rotor Resurfacing Kit (J-41013), or equivalent, clean any rust or contaminants form the mating surface of the brake rotor.
    • Clean the friction surfaces of the brake rotor with denatured alcohol, or an equivalent brake cleaner.
  7. Align the pain marks and install the rotor to the hub flange.
  8. Hold the rotor firmly in place against the hub flange. Install one of the Conical Brake Rotor Washers (J-45101-100) and one wheel nut onto the upper most wheel stud.
  9. Continue to hold the rotor secure and tighten the wheel nut firmly by hand.
  10. Install the remaining Conical Brake Rotor Washers and the wheel nuts onto the wheel studs and tighten the nuts firmly by hand in a star pattern.
  11. Tighten the wheel nuts in a star pattern in order to retain the rotor to the hub.
  12. Perform the following steps in order to measure and record the assembled lateral runout of the brake rotor:
    • Install the Hub and Wheel Runout Gage (J-45101), or equivalent. Position the indicator button so it contacts the brake rotor friction surface 0.39 in. (25 mm) from the outer edge of the rotor.
    • Verify the indicator is at a 90 degree angle to the brake rotor.
    • Rotate the rotor until the indicator dial displays the lowest reading.
    • Set the dial to zero.
    • Rotate the rotor until the indicator dial displays the highest reading.
    • Mark the location of the high spot relative to the nearest wheel stud or studs.
    • Measure and record the amount of lateral runout.
  13. Compare the lateral runout with the following specification. See LATERAL RUNOUT SPECIFICATION  table.
    LATERAL RUNOUT SPECIFICATION

    Application In. (mm)
Maximum Allowable Lateral Runout 0.006 (0.15)
  14. If the lateral runout measurement is less than the specification, complete the following steps.
    • Remove the Hub And Wheel Runout Gage.
    • Install the brake caliper and the brake pads. See DISC BRAKE PADS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    • Press the brake pedal several times in order to position the rotor.
    • Remove the wheel nuts.
    • Remove the Conical Brake Rotor Washers.
    • Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  15. If the lateral runout measurement exceeds the specification and you refinished or replaced the rotor, adjust the lateral runout. See BRAKE ROTOR ASSEMBLED LATERAL RUNOUT (LRO) CORRECTION  .
  16. If the lateral runout measurement exceeds the specification and you did not refinish or replace the rotor, refinish the rotor in order to attain true parallelism. See BRAKE ROTOR REFINISHING  .
  17. Measure the lateral runout in order to verify the rotor is within specification.
