Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM .
    NOTE: Be advised to repair one rear drum brake shoe assembly at a time. This enables you to use the other drum brake shoe assembly for visual reference.
  2. Remove the adjuster spring. See Fig 1. Use the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover (J-38400) to spread the top of the brake shoes to remove the adjuster assembly and the adjuster lever from the brake shoe. See Fig 2.
  3. Position the hook end of the brake shoe spanner under the other universal spring and lightly pull the universal spring end out of the shoe web hole. Hold the universal spring while removing the brake shoe. See Fig 3. Repeat on other wheel.
  4. Disconnect the park brake lever from the brake shoe by removing the retaining clip.
