Test E: Brake Pedal Excessive Travel

  1. If sent here from SYMPTOM INDEX  table, go to next step. If not sent here from SYMPTOM INDEX  table, perform HYDRAULIC BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  2. Inspect for proper brake pedal travel. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If the brake pedal travel distance is within the acceptable level, go to step  5. If the brake pedal travel is not within the acceptable level, go to next step.
  3. Inspect for worn, missing or damaged brake pedal system components. Replace the brake pedal system components that are worn, missing or damaged, refer to the following as necessary. If any worn, missing or damaged brake pedal system components were found and replaced, go to next step. If worn, missing or damaged brake pedal system components were not found , go to step  5.
  4. Reinspect for proper brake pedal travel. See BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTIONS. If the brake pedal travel distance is within the acceptable level, go to step  9. If the brake pedal travel distance is not within the acceptable level, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for proper operation. See HYDRAULIC SYSTEM TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS. If problem was found and corrected, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the drum brake system for proper operation. See DRUM BRAKE SYSTEM TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS. If problem was found and corrected, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  7. Inspect the disc brake system for proper operation. See DISC BRAKE SYSTEM TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS. If problem was found and corrected, go to step  9. If problem was not found, go to next step.
  8. Inspect the brake assist system for proper operation. See BRAKE ASSIST SYSTEM TEST  under SYSTEM TESTS. If problem was found and corrected, go to next step. If problem was not found, perform HYDRAULIC BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Road test the vehicle in order to confirm proper operation. See VEHICLE ROAD TEST  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If the problem is still present, go to step  2. If problem is not present, system is okay.
