Drum Brake Adjusting Hardware: Removal

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove the brake drum and shoes. See BRAKE DRUM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
    CAUTION: DO NOT over stretch the adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.
  3. Remove the adjuster spring. Disengage the adjuster spring hook end from the tab on the adjuster actuator.
  4. Use the Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover (J-38400) in order to spread the brake shoes apart. See Figure.
  5. Remove the adjuster actuator lever. Remove the adjuster actuator lever from the brake shoe.
