Removal Procedure

    CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
    CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.

  3. Release the left instrument panel (I/P) insulator tabs from the lower I/P trim pad retainers.
  4. Rotate the courtesy lamp counterclockwise in order to disconnect the courtesy lamp from the left I/P insulator.
  5. Remove the left I/P insulator from the stud at the accelerator pedal.
  6. Remove the left I/P insulator.

  7. Remove the steering column filler panel. Refer to Steering Column Filler Replacement .

  8. Remove the 4 knee bolster bracket screws.
  9. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the I/P lower trim panel.
  10. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the instrument carrier. Remove the knee bolster from the I/P.
  11. Disconnect the SIR electrical connector to the right of the steering column.
  12. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Impala) or Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Monte Carlo) in SIR.
  13. Remove the steering wheel tilt lever. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  14. Remove the steering column covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  15. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  16. Remove the I/P cluster trim plate screws.
  17. Starting at the right I/P cluster trip plate, grasp the trim plate and carefully pull rearward.
  18. Continue working around the I/P cluster trim plate until you have released all of the retainers from the I/P lower trim panel.
  19. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the hazard switch.
  20. Remove the I/P cluster trim plate.
  21. Remove the ignition cylinder bolts. Reposition the ignition cylinder.
  22. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  23. Remove the HVAC control assembly. Refer to HVAC Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC Systems-Manual.

  24. Disconnect the floor console storage bin lamp, if equipped.
  25. Remove the headlamp switch. Disconnect the headlamp switch electrical connector. Refer to Headlamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  26. Disconnect the hood latch release handle. Push the hood release handle through the opening in the I/P.

  27. Remove the data link connector screws and disconnect the data link connector.

  28. Remove the I/P cluster. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Replacement .

  29. Remove the garnish moldings from the left and the right windshield pillar. Refer to Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar (Impala) or Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar (Monte Carlo) in Interior Trim.
  30. Disconnect and reposition the left fuse block wiring harness.

  31. Starting at the right side, carefully lift upwards on the I/P upper trim panel in order to release the retainers. Continue working to your left until you have released all of the retainers.
  32. Disconnect the daytime running lamps sensor from the I/P upper trim panel.
  33. Remove the I/P upper trim panel.

  34. Remove the I/P compartment. Refer to Compartment Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) .
  35. Disconnect the I/P compartment lamp switch. Refer to Instrument Panel (I/P) Compartment Lamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  36. Remove the right upper I/P trim plate. Refer to Trim Plate Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Upper .
  37. Remove the right lower I/P trim plate. Refer to Trim Plate Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Lower .

  38. Remove the I/P upper trim pad screws.
  39. Reach under the I/P upper trip pad and release the retainers from the remote keyless entry (RKE) module.
  40. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  41. Remove the RKE module.
  42. Remove the I/P upper trim pad. Refer to Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Upper (Impala)  or Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Upper (Monte Carlo) .
  43. Disconnect the electrical connector from the inflatable restraint I/P module.
  44. Remove the inflatable restraint I/P module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  45. Remove the right I/P insulator. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement - Right .

  46. Disconnect and reposition the right I/P fuse block wiring harness.

  47. Remove the small I/P lower trim panel screws.

  48. Remove the large I/P lower trim panel screws.
  49. Reposition the I/P wiring harness.
  50. Remove the I/P lower trim panel from the vehicle.
