Removal Procedure

    CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 and SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 5 in SIR.
    2. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.

  3. Release the left instrument panel (I/P) insulator tabs from the lower I/P trim pad retainers.
  4. Rotate the courtesy lamp counterclockwise in order to disconnect the courtesy lamp from the left I/P insulator.
  5. Remove the left I/P insulator from the stud at the accelerator pedal.
  6. Remove the left I/P insulator.

  7. Remove the bolts from the steering column opening filler panel.
  8. Release the filler panel retainers from the lower trim panel. Carefully lower the filler panel away from the trim panel.
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear compartment release switch.
  10. Remove the steering column opening filler panel.

  11. Remove the 4 bracket screws from the I/P driver knee bolster.
  12. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the I/P lower trim panel.
  13. Remove the knee bolster bolts at the instrument carrier. Remove the I/P driver knee bolster.

  14. Remove the access opening cover from the right I/P.
  15. Use J 38778  in order to remove the push-in retainer from the right I/P insulator. See Special Tools .
  16. Release the right I/P insulator from the I/P lower trim panel retainers.
  17. Rotate the courtesy lamp counterclockwise in order to remove the lamp from the right I/P insulator.
  18. Remove the right I/P insulator.

  19. Remove the I/P compartment screws.
  20. Open the I/P compartment. Disconnect the damper cable from the I/P compartment tab, if equipped.
  21. Carefully remove the I/P compartment.
  22. Remove the floor console, if equipped. Refer to Console Replacement - Front Floor (Impala)  or Console Replacement - Front Floor (Monte Carlo) .
  23. Remove the SIR inflatable module from the steering wheel. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Impala) or Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Monte Carlo) in SIR.
  24. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  25. Remove the steering column shrouds.
  26. Remove the multifunction switch. Refer to Multifunction, Turn Signal Switch Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  27. If the vehicle is equipped with column shift, perform the following steps:
    1. Engage the parking brake.
    2. Position the transaxle shift control indicator to position 1.

  28. Using a small, flat-bladed tool, carefully remove the ignition switch cylinder bezel.

  29. Remove the screws from the I/P cluster trim plate.
  30. Beginning at the right, grasp the trim plate and carefully pull rearward.
  31. Continue working around the trim plate until you have released all of the retainers from the trim pad.
  32. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the hazard switch and from the traction control switch, if equipped.
  33. Remove the I/P cluster trim plate.
  34. Remove the ignition switch bolts and reposition the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Replacement .
  35. Remove the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.
  36. Remove the HVAC control assembly. Refer to HVAC Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC Systems-Manual.
  37. Remove the headlamp switch. Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlamp switch. Refer to Headlamp Switch Replacement in Lighting Systems.
  38. Remove the hood latch release handle. Refer to Hood Latch Release Handle Replacement in Body Front End.

  39. Disconnect the data link connector.
  40. Remove the garnish moldings from the left and the right windshield pillar. Refer to Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar (Impala) or Garnish Molding Replacement - Windshield Pillar (Monte Carlo) in Interior Trim.

  41. Starting at the right side, carefully lift upwards on the I/P upper trim panel in order to release the retainers. Continue working to the left until you have released all of the retainers.
  42. Disconnect the daytime running lamps sensor from the I/P upper trim panel.
  43. Remove the I/P upper trim panel.
  44. Disconnect the electrical connector from the remote keyless entry (RKE) module.
  45. Remove the RKE module.

  46. Remove the I/P upper trim pad screws. Release the retainers to the rear of the windshield.
  47. Remove the I/P upper trim pad.
  48. Remove the I/P cluster. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Replacement .
  49. Remove the SIR inflator module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Instrument Panel Module Replacement in SIR.
  50. Remove the I/P compartment lamp switch. Refer to Instrument Panel (I/P) Compartment Lamp Replacement in Lighting Systems.

  51. Remove the screws that secure the I/P lower trim panel to the cross-car beam.
  52. Reposition the I/P wiring harness.
  53. Remove the I/P lower trim panel from the vehicle.
