Removal Procedure

CAUTION: Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Engine Electrical.
    CAUTION: Refer to SIR CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in SIR.
  3. Remove the instrument panel (I/P) trim pad. Refer to TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) (CHEVROLET)  or TRIM PAD REPLACEMENT - INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) (PONTIAC)  .
  4. Remove the I/P mounted SIR module. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM in SIR.
  5. Remove the I/P cluster. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) REPLACEMENT (CHEVROLET)  or INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) REPLACEMENT (PONTIAC)  .
  6. Remove the screws for the HVAC control. Leave the harness connected to the HVAC control and position aside. Refer to HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (CHEVROLET) or HVAC CONTROL ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT (PONTIAC) in HVAC Systems-Manual.
  7. Remove the radio from the I/P carrier. Refer to RADIO REPLACEMENT in Entertainment.
  8. Remove the screws for the air distribution duct.
  9. Remove the air distribution ducts.
  10. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  11. Remove the tilt lever. Refer to TILT LEVER REPLACEMENT in Steering Wheel and Column.
  12. Remove the washer switch. Refer to WIPERS/WASHER SWITCH REPLACEMENT in Wipers/Washer Systems.
  13. Remove the screws (2) from the I/P carrier (3).
  14. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the lower tie bar (1).
  15. Remove the I/P carrier (3) from the vehicle.
