Drum Brake Adjustment
NOTE:
Tools Required: Brake Pedal Effort Gage (J-28662) and Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage (J-21177-A).
- Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force using the Brake Pedal Effort Gage.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Rotate each rear tire and wheel assembly in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum.
- If the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is not correct, remove the tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUMS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Insert the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage to the braking surface of the drum.
- Position the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage over the linings on the brake shoes.
- Turn the adjuster until the primary and secondary brake shoes contact the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage.
- Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUMS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force using the Brake Pedal Effort Gage.
- Rotate the brake drum in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum. Verify the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is correct.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower the vehicle.
