Drum Brake Adjustment

NOTE: Tools Required: Brake Pedal Effort Gage (J-28662) and Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage (J-21177-A).
  1. Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force using the Brake Pedal Effort Gage.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Rotate each rear tire and wheel assembly in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum.
  3. If the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is not correct, remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUMS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Insert the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage to the braking surface of the drum.
  6. Position the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage over the linings on the brake shoes.
  7. Turn the adjuster until the primary and secondary brake shoes contact the Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gage.
  8. Install the brake drum. See BRAKE DRUMS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 66 lbs. (30 kg) of force using the Brake Pedal Effort Gage.
  10. Rotate the brake drum in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum. Verify the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is correct.
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Tighten wheel lug nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Lower the vehicle.
