Removal Procedure
CAUTION:
Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:
Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth In order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.
- Do not grind brake linings.
- Do not sand brake linings.
- Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.

- Remove the drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
- Disconnect the shoe return spring (17) from the front shoe (14).
- Remove the shoe hold-down spring (12) from the font shoe.
- Disconnect the anchor spring (10) from the front shoe.
- Remove the following components:
- The shoe hold-down spring cups (11,13)
- The shoe pin (15)
- The front shoe (14)
- The anchor spring (10)
- Remove the following components:
- The rear shoe hold-down spring (8)
- The shoe hold-down spring cups (7,9)
- The shoe pin (16)
- The adjuster spring (18)
- The park brake lever strut with the shoe return spring (17)
- The rear shoe (6)
- Disconnect the park brake cable from the lever.
- Remove the following components:
- The 2 C-shaped park brake lever washers (1,5)
- The park brake lever return ring (4)
- The park brake lever (3)
- The rear brake shoe adjuster actuator (2)
- Inspect all of the drum brake components. Replace any component that exhibits any of the following conditions:
- Wear
- Rust
- Damage
- Inspect the brake drum. Refinish or Replace as necessary. Refer to Brake Drum Surface and Wear Inspection .
