Test A: Change Engine Oil Message Always On

  1. Perform instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. If CHANGE ENGINE OIL message illuminates in instrument cluster message center, go to next step. If CHANGE ENGINE OIL message does not illuminate, check for intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, go to step  6 .
  3. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, observe ENGINE OIL LIFE REMAINING parameter in PCM ENGINE data list. If scan tool displays zero percent, go to next step. If scan tool does not display zero percent, go to step  5 .
  4. Reset engine oil life system. See RESETTING ENGINE OIL LIFE SYSTEM  under PROGRAMMING. If CHANGE ENGINE OIL message turns off, go to step  6 . If CHANGE ENGINE OIL message does not turn off, go to next step.
  5. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to next step.
  6. Operate system to verify repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system does not operate normally, return to step  2 .
