Removal (3.4L)

WARNING: When replacing the power booster brake, make sure that the cruise control cable is not routed between the booster and the cowl. If the cable is damaged or pinched, it must be replaced. Failure to do this could result in personal injury.
NOTE: Power brake booster can be removed without completely removing master cylinder (without disconnecting pipes), but if both components are to be removed, remove master cylinder first.
NOTE: Required Tools: Power Brake Booster Holder (J-22805-B), Engine Tilt Strap (J-41131).
  1. Remove the left instrument panel insulator. Disconnect the stoplight switch electrical connector from the stoplight switch. Remove the retaining clip and disconnect the brake booster pushrod from the brake pedal. Partially drain the cooling system. Remove the cross vehicle brace. Remove the air cleaner inlet duct. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the following pipes and position the pipes aside:
    • The EVAP canister purge valve pipe.
    • The fuel feed pipe.
    • The return pipe.
  3. Disconnect the coolant outlet and the inlet bypass hoses and position the hoses aside. Remove the heater inlet pipe. Rotate the engine forward for service access. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct. Apply the parking brake. Put the transaxle in the Neutral position. Remove the engine mount strut bolts. Swing the engine mount struts aside. Install the Engine Tilt Strap. Rotate the engine forward for component access.
  4. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the brake pipes from the master cylinder to the BPMV.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the brake fluid level sensor. Remove the 2 master cylinder retaining nuts, and position the master cylinder aside. Disconnect the vacuum check valve from the brake booster. Position aside the vacuum hose and the check valve as an assembly. Attach Power Brake Booster Holder to the booster using the master cylinder retaining nuts.
  6. Unlock the booster from the cowl. Use a flat bladed tool to depress the brake booster locking tab out of the cowl mounting flange, while turning the booster counterclockwise with a ratchet on Power Brake Booster Holder. Remove the power brake booster.
