Poor Directional Stability

NOTE: Driver is unable to maintain consistent, predictable vehicle driving control in any direction.
  1. Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? If yes, go to step  2 . If no, go to SYMPTOMS - SUSPENSION GENERAL DIAGNOSIS  .
  2. Verify that the directional stability is poor. Does the system operate normally? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step  3 .
  3. Inspect the stabilizer shaft, links, and insulators for wear or damage. Replace as necessary.
    • Refer to STABILIZER SHAFT.
    • Refer to STABILIZER SHAFT LINK.
    Does the vehicle still exhibit poor directional stability? If yes, go to step  4 . If no, system is OK.
  4. Inspect the lower control arms, ball joints and tie rod ends for wear or damage. Repair as necessary.
    • Refer to LOWER CONTROL ARM.
    • Refer to LOWER BALL JOINT.
    • Refer to TIE ROD .
    Does the vehicle still exhibit poor directional stability? If yes, go to step  5 . If no, system is OK.
  5. Inspect the wheel bearings/hubs for looseness or excessive lateral runout. Refer to WHEEL BEARINGS DIAGNOSIS (TAPERED)  . Does the vehicle still exhibit poor directional stability? If yes, go to step  6 . If no, system is OK.
  6. Inspect the vehicle trim height. Refer to TRIM HEIGHT INSPECTION PROCEDURE  . Repair as necessary. Does the vehicle still exhibit poor directional stability? If yes, go to step  7 . If no, system is OK.
  7. Inspect and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary. Refer to MEASURING WHEEL ALIGNMENT in SPECIFICATIONS article. Does the vehicle still exhibit poor directional stability? If yes, go to step  8 . If no, system is OK.
  8. Inspect the steering column for looseness. Refer to LOOSENESS STEERING COLUMN . Repair as necessary. After repairs are complete, go to step  9 .
  9. Inspect the steering gear bolts for looseness. Refer to FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS in POWER STEERING article. Inspect the over-center adjustment. Refer to PITMAN SHAFT OVER-CENTER PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT - OFF VEHICLE in POWER STEERING article. Repair as necessary. After repairs are complete, go to step  10 .
  10. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If yes, system is OK. If no, go to step  3 .
