Brake Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the tire and the wheel. Install the pin into the park brake lever. See DISABLING THE PARK BRAKE CABLE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER  .
  2. Remove the rear brake drum. See BRAKE DRUM  .
  3. Remove the rear brake shoe return springs. Remove the hold-down springs. Remove the hold-down pins. Remove the shoe guide. See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove the rear brake shoe actuator and the spring. Remove the rear brake shoe actuator link. See Fig 1 .
  5. Remove the rear parking brake lever strut and spring. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster spring. Remove the rear brake shoe adjuster. Remove the rear brake shoes. See Fig 1 .
  6. Inspect all of the parts for discoloration due to heat or stress. Replace as needed. Inspect all of the parts for signs of wear. Replace as needed.
  7. Inspect the rear brake cylinder for signs of leakage. If any is found, replace. See WHEEL CYLINDER  . Inspect the rear brake drum for scoring and machining tolerance. See DRUM BRAKE COMPONENT INSPECTION  .
