Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Did you perform the diagnostic system check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Install a scan tool. Turn ignition on, engine off. Select TR SW on scan tool. Observe the TR SW display while selecting each transmission range. If selected transmission range matches scan tool TR SW display, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If selected transmission range does not match scan tool TR SW display, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the PNP switch assembly for damage, loose or missing mounting hardware and proper adjustment. Inspect the shift cable for damaged or stretched cable and proper adjustment. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If PNP switch and shift cable are okay, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, observe the TR SW A/B/C/P display. If TR SW A/B/C/P parameter indicates HI for all range signal states, go to step  13. If TR SW A/B/C/P parameter does not indicate HI for all range signal states, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the TR switch 4-pin connector. Turn ignition on, engine off. If scan tool TR SW A/B/C/P parameter indicates HI for all range signal states, go to next step. If TR SW A/B/C/P parameter does not indicate HI for all range signal states, go to step  10.
  6. Using DVOM, measure the voltage from terminal "A" of the TR switch 4-pin connector to ground. Measure the voltage from TR switch 4-pin connector terminals "A", "B", "C" and "D" to ground. If voltage measured at all four terminals is 10-12 volts, go to next step. If voltage measured at all four terminals is not 10-12 volts, go to step  11.
  7. Connect a fused jumper wire from TR switch 4-pin connector terminal "D" (signal "A" circuit) to ground while monitoring scan tool TR switch A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "A" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to next step.
  8. Connect a fused jumper wire from TR switch 4-pin connector terminal "B" (signal "B" circuit) to ground while monitoring the scan tool TR switch A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when signal "B" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to next step.
  9. Connect a fused jumper wire from TR switch 4-pin connector terminal "C" (signal "C" circuit) to ground while monitoring the scan tool TR switch A/B/C/P parameter. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW when the signal "C" circuit is grounded, go to step  12. If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  14.
  10. Test TR switch signal circuit or circuits that did not indicate HI for a short to ground. If found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If short to ground is not found, go to step  15.
  11. Test the TR switch signal circuit or circuits that did not indicate proper voltage for an open. If found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If open is not found, go to step  15.
  12. Test affected TR switch signal circuits for a shorted together condition. If found, repair as necessary, After repairs, go to step  16. If shorted together condition is not found, go to step  15.
  13. Test TR switch ground circuit for an open. If found, repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step  16. If open is not found, go to next step.
  14. Replace the TR switch. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. After repairs, go to step  16.
  15. Replace PCM. After replacement, program PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. After repairs, go to next step.
  16. Using scan tool, clear DTC. Drive vehicle greater than 5 MPH for a short distance, then stop vehicle. Select each transmission range. Place transmission in Park. If DTC P0705 does not return, system is okay. If DTC returns, go to step  1.
