Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Start and idle the engine. Observe the Crank Ref. Missed display on the scan tool. Does the scan tool display 8? If yes, go to step  4 . If no, go to next step.
  3. The DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are stored, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If any additional DTCs were stored, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  4. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the CKP sensor electrical connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a Digital Multimeter (DMM), measure the voltage between the CKP 5-volt reference circuit and chassis ground. Does the voltage measure 4.8-5.2 V? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8 .
  5. Probe the sensor ground circuit with a Unpowered Test Light (J 34142-B) connected to battery voltage. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  9 .
  6. Reconnect the CKP sensor. Backprobe the CKP signal circuit at the PCM with a DMM connected to ground. Crank the engine. Does the voltage measure 4.2-4.5 V? If yes, go to step  14 . If no, go to next step.
  7. Does the voltage measure more than 4.2-4.5 V? If yes, go to step  12 . If no, go to step  11 .
  8. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM, and check the CKP 5-volt reference circuit the following conditions:
    • An open.
    • A short to ground.
    • A short to the sensor ground circuit.

    If the CKP 5-volt reference circuit is open or shorted to ground, repair the circuit as necessary. Did you perform a repair? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  10 .

  9. Check for an open or a poor sensor ground terminal connection at the PCM. If a problem is found, repair the problem as necessary. Did you perform a repair? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  16 .
  10. Check the CKP 5-volt reference circuit for a poor connection at the PCM and replace the terminal if necessary. Did you perform a repair? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  16
  11. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the PCM and check the CKP signal circuit for the following conditions:
    • An open.
    • A short to ground.
    • A short to the sensor ground circuit.

    Check the terminal connections at the CKP sensor for damage or a poor connection. If a problem is found, repair the problem as necessary. Did you perform a repair? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  15 .

  12. Disconnect the CKP sensor pigtail connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With the DMM connected to ground, probe the CKP signal circuit at the engine harness connector. Is there voltage present on the CKP sensor signal circuit? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  14 .
  13. Repair the short to voltage on the CKP sensor signal circuit. After repairs, go to step  17 .
  14. Check the CKP signal circuit for a poor connection at the PCM and replace the terminal if necessary. Did you perform a repair? If yes, go to step  17 . If no, go to step  16 .
  15. Replace the crankshaft position sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After replacing the sensor, the PCM must be programmed with a new TDC Offset. See FUEL INJECTION PUMP TOP DEAD CENTER OFFSET ADJUSTMENT  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to step  17 .
  16. Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  17. Using the scan tool, clear the DTCs. Start engine and idle the engine at the normal operating temperature. Select DTC and the Specific DTC function. Enter the DTC number that was set. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Setting DTC until the scan tool indicates the diagnostic ran. Does the scan tool indicate the diagnostic passed? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  18. Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
