Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the ESO harness electrical connector. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a J 34142-B Unpowered Test Lamp connected to chassis ground, probe the ESO ignition feed circuit at the engine harness connector. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6 .
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. With a J 34142-B, jumper the ESO engine harness terminals together. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7 .
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a J 34142-B connected to battery voltage, probe the ESO control circuit. With the scan tool, command the ESO solenoid ON and OFF. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8 .
  5. Check the ESO harness for a faulty connection and replace the terminals if necessary. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to step  11 .
  6. Check the ESO ignition feed circuit for:
    • An open wire.
    • An open fuse.

    Repair the circuit as necessary. After repairs, go to step  13 .

  7. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a J 34142-B connected to ground, probe the ESO control circuit at the ESO harness connector. Does the test lamp illuminate? If yes, go to step  10 . If no, go to step  9 .
  8. Repair the short to ground on the ESO control circuit. Did you complete the repair? After repairs, go to step  13 .
  9. Check the ESO control circuit for:
    • An open wire.
    • A faulty connection at the PCM.

    If an ESO control circuit condition is found, repair the circuit as necessary. Did you find and repair the condition? If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to step  12 .

  10. Check the ESO control circuit for a short to voltage. If an ESO control circuit condition is found, repair the circuit as necessary. Did you find and complete the repair? If yes, go to step  13 . If no, go to step  12 .
  11. Replace the engine shut-off solenoid. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repairs, go to step  13 .
  12. Replace the PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repairs, go to next step.
  13. Using the scan tool, clear the DTCs. Start engine and idle the engine at the normal operating temperature. Select DTC and the Specific DTC function. Enter the DTC number that was set. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Setting DTC until the scan tool indicates the diagnostic ran. Does the scan tool indicate the diagnostic passed? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  14. Observe the stored information, Capture Info with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
