Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. 4:  This step tests the TCM and circuit 400 for voltage at the ECM connector.
  2. 5:  This step tests for continuity and a short to ground in the wiring system between the TCM and ECM.

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. IMPORTANT:
    • Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the TCM.
    • Using the Clear Info function erases stored DTCs in both the TCM and ECM.
  4. Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records.
Is there a DTC P0721 or P0722 present?
- Go to DTC P0721  or DTC P0722  Go to Step 3

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. IMPORTANT:
    • Before clearing the DTC, use the scan tool in order to record the Freeze Frame and Failure Records from the ECM.
    • Using the Clear Info function erases stored DTCs in both the ECM and TCM.
  4. Record the DTC Freeze Frame and Failure Records.
  5. Clear the DTC.
  6. CAUTION: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
  7. Raise and support the vehicle.
  8. Start and idle the engine.
  9. Turn off the traction control system, if equipped.
  10. Select and monitor Engine Data 1/Vehicle Speed on the scan tool.
  11. Place the transmission into DRIVE. With the drive wheels rotating, slowly increase the engine speed.
Does Vehicle Speed on the scan tool increase with wheel speed?
- Go to Intermittent Conditions in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7) Go to Step 4 
  1. Turn OFF the engine.
  2. Disconnect connector C2 at the ECM.
  3. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  4. Using the DMM and the J 35616  GM terminal test kit, test the signal circuit for voltage between pin 21 and ground.
Is the circuit voltage within the specified range?
-5.0 V to 4.0 V or +5.0 V to 4.0 V Go to Step 7  Go to Step 5 
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Test the signal circuit between the TCM and ECM for the following:
Did you find and correct a condition?
- Go to Step 8  Go to Step 6 
6 Replace the TCM. Refer to Transmission Control Module (TCM) Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 8  -
7 Replace the ECM. Refer to Engine Control Module (ECM) Replacement in Engine Controls - 6.6L (LB7).
Did you complete the replacement?
- Go to Step 8  -

  1. Select the DTC.
  2. Select Clear Info.
  3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC.
  4. Select Transmission Specific DTC.
  5. Enter DTC P0500.
Has the test run and passed?
- System OK Go to Step 1
