Transmission Range Indicator (PRNDL) Park Indicator Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Move shift lever to Park position and observe transmission range indicator. If PRNDL displays Park position, check for intermittent in wiring or connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If PRNDL does not display Park position, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under left side of dash. Turn ignition on. Place shift lever in Park position. Using scan tool, observe park switch parameter in IPC DATA LIST. If scan tool does not display CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool displays CLOSED, check Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch and adjust or replace as necessary. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  4. Disconnect PNP switch wiring at in-line harness connector, located several inches from PNP switch on side of transmission. Connect fused jumper wire between ground and PNP switch connector terminal "C" (White wire). Using scan tool, observe park switch parameter in IPC DATA LIST. If scan tool does not display CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool displays CLOSED, go to step 6).
  5. Check for open or high resistance in White wire between PNP switch connector terminal "C" and Vehicle Control Module (VCM) 32-pin Clear connector terminal No. 26. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary and retest operation. If White wire is okay, go to step 8).
  6. Check for open or high resistance in Black/White wire between PNP switch connector terminal "D" and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair as necessary and retest operation. If Black/White wire is okay, go to next step.
  7. Replace PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.
  8. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.
