Oil Pressure Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

  1. Perform INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) SYSTEM CHECK  under SYSTEM TESTS. Go to next step.
  2. If oil pressure gauge is operating correctly at this time, check for intermittent condition in wiring and connectors. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If oil pressure gauge is inaccurate or inoperative, go to next step.
  3. If oil pressure gauge displays more than 80 psi, go to step 7). If oil pressure gauge does not display more than 80 psi, go to next step.
  4. If oil pressure gauge displays zero at all times, go to step 10). If oil pressure gauge does not display zero at all times, go to next step.
  5. Ensure engine oil level is correct. Check oil pressure with engine at operating temperature. On 2.2L models, oil pressure should be 56 psi at 3000 RPM. On 4.3L models, oil pressure should be a minimum of 6 psi at 1000 RPM, 18 psi at 2000 RPM, and 24 psi at 4000 RPM. On all models, if oil pressure is not as specified, see appropriate article in ENGINES. Repair as necessary. If oil pressure is as specified, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender electrical connector. Connect a variable 100 ohm resistor between ground and oil pressure gauge sender electrical connector terminal "A" (Tan/White wire). Turn ignition on. Turn variable resistor from minimum to maximum resistance while observing oil pressure gauge. Oil pressure gauge should read no oil pressure at zero ohms and maximum oil pressure at 88 ohms. If oil pressure gauge does not read as specified, go to step 16). If oil pressure gauge reads as specified, go to step 15).
  7. Ensure engine oil level is correct. Check oil pressure with engine at operating temperature. On 2.2L models, oil pressure should be 56 psi at 3000 RPM. On 4.3L models, oil pressure should be a minimum of 6 psi at 1000 RPM, 18 psi at 2000 RPM, and 24 psi at 4000 RPM. On all models, if oil pressure is not as specified, see appropriate article in ENGINES. Repair as necessary. If oil pressure is as specified, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at oil pressure gauge sender electrical connector terminal A (Tan/White wire). If 7.0-9.5 volts exists, go to step 15). If 7.0-9.5 volts does not exist, go to next step.
  9. Remove instrument cluster as necessary for access to IPC connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure ignition is on. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage (backprobe) at IPC connector terminal A2 (Tan/White wire). See Figure . If 7.0-9.5 volts exists, go to step 14). If 7.0-9.5 volts does not exist, go to step 16).
  10. Ensure engine oil level is correct. Check oil pressure with engine at operating temperature. On 2.2L models, oil pressure should be 56 psi at 3000 RPM. On 4.3L models, oil pressure should be a minimum of 6 psi at 1000 RPM, 18 psi at 2000 RPM, and 24 psi at 4000 RPM. On all models, if oil pressure is not as specified, see appropriate article in ENGINES. Repair as necessary. If oil pressure is as specified, go to next step.
  11. Disconnect oil pressure gauge sender electrical connector. Turn ignition on. If oil pressure gauge remains at more than 80 psi, go to step 15). If oil pressure gauge does not remain at more than 80 psi, go to next step.
  12. Disconnect IPC connector. Remove instrument cluster as necessary for access to IPC connector. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove IPC connector comb. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, backprobe IPC connector terminal A2 (Tan/White wire). See Figure . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 17).
  13. Repair short to ground in Tan/White wire between oil pressure gauge sender connector terminal "A" and IPC connector terminal A2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  14. Repair open in Tan/White wire between oil pressure gauge sender connector terminal "A" and IPC connector terminal A2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest operation.
  15. Replace oil pressure gauge sender. Retest operation.
  16. Disconnect IPC connector. Remove IPC connector comb. Check for short to voltage in Tan/White wire between IPC connector terminal A2 and oil pressure gauge sender connector terminal "A". Repair as necessary and retest operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If Tan/White wire is not shorted to voltage, go to next step.
  17. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest operation.
