Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the fuel tank shield mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the fuel tank shield.

  4. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - REAR in Propeller Shaft.

  5. Drain the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Fluid Replacement .
  6. Remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - FRONT in Propeller Shaft.

  7. Remove the fuel lines from the retainer.

  8. Remove the electrical harness from the retainer (right side).

  9. Remove the electrical harness from the retainer (left side).

  10. Remove the electrical connector from the speed sensors (front speed sensor shown).

  11. Remove the motor/encoder electrical connector.
  12. Remove the transfer case wiring harness.

  13. Remove the vent hose.

  14. Install a transmission jack for the transfer case.
  15. Remove the transfer case mounting bolts.

  16. Remove the transfer case from the vehicle.

    IMPORTANT: The transfer case gasket may become damaged during the removal Procedure.
  17. Remove the transfer case gasket.
