Removal Procedure

- Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery.
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM .
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - LOWER .
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to EXHAUST CROSSOVER PIPE REPLACEMENT .
- Remove the pushrods and valve rocker arms. Refer to VALVE ROCKER ARM AND PUSH ROD REPLACEMENT .
- Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.
- Remove the cylinder head.
- Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
- Clean the following areas:
- The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds.
- The cylinder block bolt threads.
- The cylinder head bolts.
- Clean and inspect the cylinder head.
- If the cylinder head is being replaced, perform the following steps:
- Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD REPLACEMENT - RIGHT .
- Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head. Refer to SPARK PLUGS .
