Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn OFF ignition. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ON ignition, leaving engine OFF. Is MIL illuminated? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5.
  3. Remove Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Test MIL control circuit for short to ground between PCM and IPC. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.
  4. Replace IPC. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. When complete, go to step  6.
  5. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  6. Start engine and observe MIL. Does the MIL turn OFF in about 1-2 seconds after engine is started? If yes, system is okay. If no, perform DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
